Nobody likes sitting on a dirty toilet, and even if you can’t help it in some public restrooms, your home shouldn’t look like one!
Although not really a health hazard, hard water stains will give that nasty impression. While you can’t completely avoid these stains, you can still remove them! Just follow the method below and leave your toilet squeaky clean.
Does the color of the stain matter?
Well, hard water stains on your toilet usually look grayish, chalky white, or brownish—all these are normal! So don’t worry; you can use the same simple solution for those stains.
An acidic cleaner is your best ally since it can dissolve the minerals from hard water deposits. The best part is you don’t need to fetch one at the store! Vinegar with baking soda will dissolve stains just as well as any commercial product!
Step 1. Start by pouring vinegar into the toilet
White vinegar is a common household item with acidic properties, which are great at dissolving mineral deposits. So, pour two cups of white vinegar down the toilet and let it rest for a minute—don’t flush just yet!
Step 2. Add baking soda to the mix
Pour one cup of baking soda and two more cups of white vinegar into the toilet bowl. This mixture will start fizzing, which means it’s working its magic. Just let it sit for another ten minutes—remember, without flushing.
Step 3. Scrub the stains
While vinegar and baking soda can reach some stains on the toilet, they may not get to the ones near the rim. So, after the allotted waiting time, use a toilet brush to scrub the solution onto the stains to ensure all the surface is covered.
Step 4. Simply wait
The last step is the easiest; you only need to wait half an hour for the solution to do its job, and then you can flush the toilet. That’s it! Now your toilet should be free of hard water stains.
Note: you can go as far as waiting overnight to ensure the solution gets the job done. Don’t worry! Vinegar is powerful, but not so much that it can damage your toilet bowl.
Extra step: Use a pumice stone on stubborn stains
Some stubborn stains might still remain even after using the previous cleaning mix. If this is the case, you can use a pumice stone to remove any difficult spots!
To do this step, thoroughly wet the stone and toilet bowl. Then carefully scrub the bowl with the stone to avoid damaging the ceramic, and lastly, flush. Remember to wear gloves to avoid hurting your hands!
