Microfiber cloths are a great choice to easily clean almost anything around your house. Sudden spills, piled-up dust, dirty countertops, you name it. Best of all is that microfibers are reusable. However, that factor can cause microfiber cloths to become extremely dirty.
If you feel your microfiber cloths are not cleaning as well as they used to, or you realize they leave an unpleasant smell behind, it’s time to give them a good wash. Doing it is as easy as getting them dirty, and there are two ways to get the job done. Follow these simple methods and restore the cleaning power of your microfiber cloths.
Method #1. Machine wash your microfiber cloths
Step 1. Prepare a washing load
Separate your microfibers from other clothing items to prevent lint from sticking to them. Shake off the excess dirt in a ventilated area and put them in the washing machine. Add your preferred fabric detergent but refrain from using softener since the residue can clog and damage the fibers.
Note: Make sure to always check the washing instructions on the microfiber’s label before proceeding.
Step 2. Get rid of stains and smell
You can add your usual stain remover if the microfiber cloths are badly stained. As for funny smells, you can add one tablespoon of white vinegar along with the detergent. Run a warm cycle if the microfiber cloths smell funny, so it acts with vinegar. Otherwise, you can use cold water.
Step 3. Hang to air dry
Once the cycle is done, hang your microfiber cloths and let them air dry completely before storing them. You want to avoid putting them in the drying machine because microfibers are synthetic rags, which are basically plastic, and heat can damage them or cause them to shrink.
Method #2. Hand wash the microfiber cloths
Step 1. Prepare your sink
Start by filling your sink with warm water and add your preferred detergent. Same as the previous option, you can add vinegar to remove bad smells and/or stain remover if necessary. Refrain from using bleach, as this can erode the fibers.
Note: You can also use a container big enough to wash your cloths.
Step 2. Soak and rub
Soak your microfiber cloths in the mixture and let them sit for about 15 minutes. Stir the water to help release the dirt and grime stuck on the fibers.
If doing so isn’t enough to remove stubborn stains, you can rub the microfiber cloths using your fingers or even scrub if necessary. Just make sure to do it carefully so the fibers are not damaged in the process. You may rinse and repeat if necessary.
Step 3. Rinse and air dry
The last step is to rinse well under running water. Once you are sure all the detergent is out, wring out the excess water and hang the microfiber cloths to air dry.
